SCOTLAND will begin their quest for Women’s Six Nations Championship glory this weekend.

Bryan Easson named a 34-player training squad last month ahead of the tournament getting under way on Saturday.

Scotland, including Musselburgh’s Francesca McGhie, will make the trip to Cardiff Arms Park as they take on Wales in the second match of the day.

Last year, Scotland finished fourth after victories over Italy and Ireland.

Twenty-year-old McGhie made her international debut in the opening round of fixtures last year against England.

The former Loretto pupil, who plays her rugby for Leicester Tigers, would go on to enjoy a breakout competition as she scored a try against Ireland in the 36-10 win.

Scotland’s team for the opening game is set to be announced today (Thursday).

Head coach Easson spoke about the tournament when the expanded squad was announced.

He said: “After our success in South Africa at WXV2, we are ready to push on with a Six Nations campaign and it’s exciting to be doing this with new faces to the squad and management team.

“The expansion of the Celtic Challenge has helped us identify a number of up-and-coming players who have showcased they deserve a chance to take the next step.

“It’s great to bring in a number of experienced players and those whose professional careers have been flourishing in the Allianz PWR.

“Lana Skeldon, Rachel Malcolm, Evie Gallagher and Elliann Clarke have all been real standouts in that competition, alongside newcomer Meg Varley.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this group challenge each other in the run up to the championship.”
