MUCH-DELAYED finals have finally been played at the Tyne District Squash and Racketball Club.

The 2021 finals were shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic but were finally completed on October 23.

First on court were Dylan and Jamie Pearman in the racketball handicap final.

The match was highly competitive but played in the most sporting manner possible. Dylan, with a handicap of -13, won the first two games 11-7 and 11-8. Jamie came storming back and took the third game 11-6.

The fourth game went down to the wire and Dylan won it 11-10, with the match lasting 80 minutes.

Next on court were Phoebe Hamilton and Lynsay Grimshaw in the ladies’ racketball handicap final.

Grimshaw, with a handicap of +5, won the first game 11-0, Hamilton misfiring.

However, the 12-year-old came roaring back to win the next two 11-5 and 11-6.

Grimshaw fought back and took the fourth game 11-3.

The fifth game went point for point up to 8-8, when Hamilton played some quality shots to win 11-9 and take the match.

The squash plate final was contested by Josh Bain and Iain Dixon, both having lost their first-round matches in the open squash event. Bain was always in control and won 15-5, 15-10, 15-8.

The open squash handicap final was contested by Gordon Hamilton and Graeme Murray, with Murray initially on -10.

Murray’s superior fitness and tactics were put to full use and he finally won 11-9, 11-9, 11-8.

The ladies’ squash final saw defending champion Julie Pearman playing up-and-coming 14-year-old Isla Hamilton.

Pearman won the first game 15-4 and the second much more narrowly, 16-14. Hamilton took the third game 15-11 and the fourth was a real nail-biter, the lead changing hands constantly before Pearman won 16-14 to triumph.
