A HARD-WORKING team have been crowned champions after losing just one game this season.

Preston Lodge Ladies Hockey Club, formed in the late 1960s, wrapped up the East District Division Two title last weekend.

Fourteen wins from a possible 18 ensured they finished at the top of the table ahead of Ross High and Cala 3, who were the only team to defeat them.

Gillian McEwan, who plays for the team, said they were going from strength to strength.

The club has 42 playing members, ranging from the age of 14 up to late 50s.

Gillian said: “It’s just the commitment to training.

“We have got a new coach as well, Mekala Osborne, and she has been absolutely amazing.

“She was a player in the team and more recently she has taken on a coaching role.

“We are just developing a stronger team really and the club itself has developed as well.”

The club trains every Tuesday at Meadowmill from August through to the end of March.

The title triumph means the club will now be promoted to East District One, with a second team in East District Four.

A spokesperson for the club was looking forward to the “further challenges” in the new league. They said: “These will be faced with the same commitment and enthusiasm displayed by them this past season.”
