DUNBAR Paralympic star Maria Lyle was named Scottish Young Athlete of the Year at the Team Scotland Awards.

The award caps a superb few weeks for the teenager, who won three medals at the Rio Games – with relay silver either side of bronze in the 100m and 200m.

The 16-year-old was unable to attend the awards evening – she travelled south earlier this week to start studies at St Albans’ Oaklands College.

Maria was, though, delighted to have won the Sir Peter Heatly Trophy.

She tweeted: "Just found out I won @Team_Scotland young athlete of the year!!

"Thank you for thinking about me and hope the evening went well!"

Lyle, who has cerebral palsy, beat swimmer Kathleen Dawson and boxer John Docherty to the award.

British Athletics passed on their congratulations through the social media site, adding: "Congratulations to triple Paralympic medallist @Lyle_Maria who won @Team_Scotland Young Athlete of the Year."

He said: "Result! Dunbar's own @Lyle_Maria is young athlete of the year at Scottish Sports Awards. Well deserved"

In Maria's absence, mum Susan attended the awards evening and picked up her award.

There was disappointment for the team from Tranent and District Community Sports Hub.

They were shortlisted for the community sport hub of the year, but missed out on the award.

"We were so proud that @TDCSC1 were in the final 3,unfortunately didn't win.But the work done by all our clubs are now highlighted," they tweeted.
