CHRISTINE Black was the star of the European Senior Championships in Slovenia, with two gold medals.

Black, the county's badminton development officer, claimed gold in the over-60s women's doubles and over-55s mixed doubles, alongside Dan Travers.

She was denied a hat-trick of gold medals as she fell to defeat in the over-60s women's singles final, but claimed her third medal of the championships with silver.

Shee was, though, delighted with her three-medal haul.

Christine told Courier Sport: "I was delighted at reaching all three finals and winning two titles – it’s a big ask playing three finals in the space of under three hours but I am delighted to win two gold and a silver medal.

"I was happy with my performances, considering l have very little time to train myself – my main priority is developing badminton in East Lothian and also coaching East Lothian Performance athletes at both primary and secondary age groups."

Black and Travers, BADMINTONscotland Presidents past and present, were second seeds in the mixed doubles but they came out on top against German No. 1 seeds Stefan Frey and Heidi Bender (21-18 15-21 21-12).

That followed their hard-fought three-set semi-final win against Denmark's Jesper Tolman and Annette Vollertzen on Friday.

Black added the over-60s women's doubles title when she and Dutch partner Marjan Ridder defeated England's second seeds Betty Bartlett and Ann Hurst 21-8 21-17.

The win gave Ridder her second gold after winning the 60+ mixed doubles with husband Rob.

Black and Ridder had earned their golden shot thanks to a 21-8 21-6 semi-final victory over England's Brenda Creasey and Lin Wild.

The county star missed out on a golden treble when the second seed lost the over-60s women's singles against England's top seed Christine Crossley.

Black had beaten England's Betty Bartlett 21-19 17-21 21-13 in the semi-finals, but fell 21-11 21-14 in the final.

Anne Smillie, BADMINTONscotland chief executive, congratulated Black and Travers on their medal successes.

She said: "The skills which made them both top Scotland players in their international careers have clearly not deserted them and they have done us proud this week in Slovenia."

Black may return to action at the Scottish Masters in December, while she may also be involved in an international against England early in the New Year.
