FOUR East Lothian youngsters have been selected to take part in the School Games at Loughborough University and Sheffield next month.

The quartet is made up of a trio of Tranent resident – swimmer Christian Buchanan, rugby ace Sula Callender and judoka Catherine Brownlee.

They are joined in the squad by 16-year-old Dylan Hughes, from Dirleton, who will represent Scotland in cycling.

It is a second selection for Buchanan, while the remaining East Lothian competitors will be taking part in the prestigious event for the first time.

They were all delighted to have booked their places in the Scotland squad.

Buchanan, who trains at East Lothian Swim Team, said: “I was really excited when I received the letter from Scottish Swimming saying I had been selected again.

"I really enjoyed the experience last year and I am really looking forward to going again this year."

Callender, a pupil at Ross High School, added: “I am delighted to have the opportunity take part in a national competition and feel excited to play with and against new players.”

Brownlee, who trains at Sportif Judo, said: “I feel honoured to have been picked to represent Scotland and know it will be a massive step forward in my career.

"I am very excited to compete in September.”

Meanwhile, Hughes added: “I'm very lucky to be selected and feel proud to ride for Scotland.”

At the event they will live within an athletes’ village, attend spectacular opening and closing ceremonies and perform in front of crowds of thousands.

There is a full education programme, which aims to give them an insight on life at the very highest level of competition.

Previous competitors include Olympic gold medallist and world-record breaking swimmer Adam Peaty, Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock, Olympic heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and sprinter Adam Gemili.
