TOILETS damaged by vandalism and fire last month have finally reopened.

East Lothian Council closed the public toilets on Tranent’s Lindores Drive after they were targeted on March 12.

Now, after repairs were carried out, the toilet block is once again fully open – more than four weeks after they were closed.

It is not the first time that the toilets have been targeted by vandals.

Last year, the toilets were subject to deliberate blocking of drains, while damage was caused to the doors and fires were set in bins.

In November, East Lothian Council confirmed that continued incidents could result in “further consideration” of the opening hours at the facilities.

The latest incident led Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, to warn that the town was “going to lose” its toilets.

He said: “It's very unfortunate and it is a handful of people that are doing it.

"Unfortunately, they are going to end up losing the toilets.

“That is a real concern.

"I think if they managed to catch who did it, it would stop."

Discussions also took place at the community council’s meeting last month.

Councillor Lee-Anne Menzies suggested charging for the use of the facilities in a bid to deter vandals.
