The organist at Northesk Church in Musselburgh has hit a high note after receiving a top accolade.

Jeonghee Min, an associate of Trinity College, London, recently qualified as a colleague of the Royal College of Organists, and was awarded the Limpus, Shinn and Durrant prize for the ‘most outstanding candidate’ in the practical examination.

The presentation by the RCO took place at Southwark Cathedral last Saturday.

Jeonghee was born in Seoul, South Korea, but now lives in Musselburgh with her husband Joon, who is studying music therapy at the town’s Queen Margaret University.

She began piano lessons at the age of four and went on to develop a special interest in “inspiring wellbeing in people through music”.

This was expressed, initially, by training as a nurse and followed by a Master of Arts degree in music therapy.

Currently, she is dedicated to developing her skills as a musician and in teaching music to others.

Jeonghee said: “I am delighted to be able to share the good news with the Northesk Church family.

“I am blessed to have the outpouring of love and support from our church members and I feel very grateful for every moment I play for services and occasions.

“I hope to return that love through music that brings joy and comfort.

“I enjoy playing and arranging tunes and songs which church members thankfully shared with me – these are filled with beautiful stories and memories.

“Also, I continue to explore the wonderful organ in our church and am always impressed by how many things its sounds can express.”

Jeonghee and Joon have become a “very welcome addition to the community and the Northesk Church family”, a Northesk spokesperson said.

He explained that both brought their “own unique blend of friendship, enthusiasm, participation, skills and talents” to church life in general and Sunday morning worship in particular.

He added: “It would be easy to simply label her as ‘the church organist’, which she is, but Jeonghee delivers much, much more, taking a wider role in providing church music and leading praise.

“Joon’s dulcet tones also add considerably to the choir, along with his own musicianship blending and complementing that of his wife from time to time.”

Jeonghee will be giving a celebratory recital of organ and piano music in Northesk Church next Saturday (March 23) from 2pm, which will be an “exciting, versatile and entertaining potpourri of themes from film, musicals, opera, classical, folk and traditional genre”.

Tickets at £10, including refreshments, can be purchased through members of Northesk Church or people can turn up on the day and pay at the door.
