TRANENT is "going to lose" its public toilets if vandalism continues, according to the chair of the town's community council.

East Lothian Council confirmed this afternoon that the public toilets on the town's Winton Place had been closed after being vandalised and suffering fire damage.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council confirmed that attempts had been made to start a fire in the facilities and that damage had been caused to paintwork within the toilets.

The toilets will be closed until further notice once damage is assessed.

The facilities suffered vandalism in April and November last year, with East Lothian Council confirming in November that continued incidents of vandalism might result in "further consideration" of the opening hours at the facilities.

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, told the Courier that he was concerned by the vandalism.

He said: "It's very unfortunate and it is a handful of people that are doing it.

"Unfortunately, they are going to end up losing the toilets. That is a real concern.

"I think if they managed to catch who did it, it would stop."

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said that it was too soon to give a statement on whether hours at the facilities would be reduced.
