CONNECTIONS between Dunbar Grammar School (DGS) and overseas students were formed when youngsters from St Luke’s College in Argentina, who have been touring Scotland, England, Wales and Spain, stopped off at the county school.

Friendly hockey and rugby matches were contested between DGS and the youngsters from Buenos Aires, with Musselburgh’s Loretto joining in to make up the numbers.

Scott Marnoch, sport and physical activity co-ordinator at DGS, felt the experience was enjoyed by all.

He said: “St Luke’s were bringing three hockey teams so we had to ask local schools to help out and we were fortunate that Loretto helped us out by bringing two of their teams.

“The day itself went well and we had over 150 young people playing hockey and 40 boys playing rugby.”

Dunbar Grammar School took a narrow victory in the rugby contest, before Loretto came out on top in the hockey tournament.

Mr Marnoch added: “The standard of play in both the rugby and hockey was high and the matches were competitive and played in good spirits.

“After the rugby match, both teams were piped off the field to Flower of Scotland, followed by St Luke’s players, who were also in the ‘choir,’ returning a musical rendition.

“East Lothian Provost, Councillor John McMillan, was down to welcome and chat to the visiting school and kindly presented St Luke’s with mementos of East Lothian.”
