Tranent Day Centre members have raised £2,085 for the centre by waalking a combined distance of 170.6-miles (the equivalent of walking from the day centre to Loch Lomond and back) without leaving the centre.

Taking them around five weeks to complete, staff at the centre, which has around 40 members, used pedometers to track the number of steps members did at the centre each day they came in.

They undertook the challenge to help raise funds for the day centre through sponsorship and to encourage members to stay fit.

Shona Sibley, a staff member who organised the walk, said: “The enthusiasm and dedication shown from the members was incredible.

“We made the halfway point just a few weeks ago and have completed the walk home in just over two weeks.

“They were all incredibly motivated and once they saw the donations coming in they wanted to do us all proud and get it done.

“One member in particular, who has Parkinson’s, was incredible. She was barely able to walk but yet she did and was as motivated as ever to get her steps in.”

The money raised from the walk will go towards funding the day centre over Christmas and will help the members have the best Christmas possible.

Shona said: “We’ve only started doing these fundraisers recently. We get some financial help from the council but in order to fund everything we do we need the support of donations.

“This will help fund our Christmas party and Christmas gifts for members and next year we’ll look at other fundraising opportunities.”

Donations can still be made to Tranent Day Centre by calling them on 01875 444711.
