The Prestoungrange Gothenburg has confirmed that a new tenant will take over the day-to-day running of the historic Prestonpans pub next year.

Building owner Dr Gordon Prestoungrange told the Courier that the new tenant would join in the new year, removing any fears that the pub could close.

Patrick Cairney, from the Linton Hotel and Steakhouse, East Linton, will take up the mantle.

As manager there he has won much acclaim, including most recently the Hotel Restaurant of the Year Scotland at the Scottish Food Awards in 2021.

Mr Cairney, from Prestonpans, will become the new licensee at the start of 2023.

The Goth was established more than 110 years ago to encourage sensible drinking among local miners and the general working classes.

Its principles were based on the Gothenburg pub system used successfully in Sweden and adopted in parts of Scotland in the late 19th century.

The Goth has always played a vital role in the local community with profits, for many years, being used to support the arts and the community in Prestonpans and wider East Lothian.

During the height of the pandemic, The Goth delivered 350 children's breakfast boxes to families in East Lothian.

Four years ago, the running of the pub was taken over by Michelle and Calum Wilson.

The pair reinvigorated the pub, attracting live music and bringing it back to the very centre of the community.

However, on social media last week, they confirmed that the "spiralling cost of living" meant continuing to trade was "no longer viable" for them.

However, Dr Prestoungrange – who has owned the pub for more than two decades – has now confirmed that Patrick Cairney will take over as licensee, stating that it was "sad to see Michelle and Calum move on".

He added: "The formal transfers will be completed during January and The Gothenburg will reopen no later than weekend February 4/5 2023."

The existing licensees' last day of trading will take place on January 1, 2023 and Dr Prestoungrange added that the pub will be closed during early January to get everything "sorted out".
