An 81-year-old army veteran has organised a charity 5km run at Whitekirk Hill, with the potential aim of bringing a new regular parkrun event to the area.

Gerry Taggart is a dedicated runner, with more than 250 parkruns already under his belt.

Parkruns are free, weekly, community 5km runs held all around the world, including each Saturday at Dunbar and also Meadowmill, by Tranent.

The retired Royal Engineers officer served in Parachute and Commando forces, gaining much experience of long-distance running during his military service.

He moved from Worcestershire to North Berwick with his wife Mo a year ago.

He said: “When my wife Mo and I moved to North Berwick, we were surprised that there was neither a parkrun here nor a local running club.

“That’s why we thought that Whitekirk Hill would be an ideal venue for setting up a parkrun.

“It has a challenging route, parking, toilets and – vitally – a great cafe. ”

Funds raised by Gerry’s 5km run, which takes place at noon on Sunday, September 25, will go to the charity Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).

Baroness Ruth Davidson and Scottish Veterans Commissioner Susie Hamilton are both set to attend in support of the run.

Gerry and Mo are hoping the charity run will lead to a regular parkrun event around the course.

He added: “I’ve a feeling if this SSAFA 5k is a success, other runs at Whitekirk Hill will happen. But I’m not jumping the gun yet!”

A Whitekirk Hill spokesperson said: “We are delighted and excited to be holding the very first Whitekirk Hill 5km.

“Gerry’s passion and enthusiasm for running is quite incredible – how could we refuse?

“We would encourage runners young and old to come and join Gerry and help him raise funds for SSAFA.

“The faster runners will find a challenging course; the slower runners will have a chance to take in the stunning views

“All runners, spectators and four-legged friends are welcome to enjoy local roasted coffee and homemade cake in our orangery.”

Race entry is £10, with under 16s free.

Runners are welcome to bring dogs on a short lead.
