The driver of the Hollies Hub minibus has put his best foot forward to raise £550 for the facility which provides services for older people.

Ewan Mclay, from Musselburgh, completed a ‘virtual’ walk from John o’ Groats to Land’s End as part of the ‘End to End’ challenge – a total of 874 miles.

His walking routine was varied and included a round of golf, walking around Musselburgh and fitting in a few extra miles when walking to work.

He started the walk in January and finished last month, and was grateful to all those who donated.

He said: “I’d like to thank everyone who supported me.”

The Hollies, based on Musselburgh High Street, runs a lunch club, hairdresser’s and public café.

The hub had been hit with a cash crisis, sparking concern that it might have to shut its doors at the end of April.

A Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), it relies on funding from outside agencies, and applications to funders had been unsuccessful.

A lifeline was thrown to the facility, which has provided services to elderly people for 60 years, with an injection of £32,000 from Musselburgh Common Good Fund.

A GoFundMe page was also set up and a petition launched urging local people to get behind the campaign to save the Hollies Community Hub.

Manager Liz Shannon said: “Well done to Ewan for his ‘virtual’ sponsored walk and thank you.”

The 2022 Honest Lass Amy Rooke presented him with his medal for completing the walk when the official party visited the Hollies during Musselburgh Festival Week.

They also helped with a raffle draw which raised more than £500 for the hub.
