VANDALS targeted a town defibrillator on Saturday evening, resulting in the machine being temporarily moved to a nearby private residence.

The glass casing protecting the defibrillator was found smashed, while the potentially life-saving machine was not damaged.

The circumstances of the vandalism is under investigation by East Lothian police and the ambulance service to determine whether the potentially life-saving machine was accessed without using a code provided by the ambulance crew, or if the shell of the defibrillator was vandalised.

Due to the broken casing, the defibrillator has now been moved to a private residence near the centre on a temporary basis.

The cabinet is due to be repaired in the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council added: "In an emergency, if you need access to the 24 hour yellow boxes please call 999 for the code.

"Do not call anyone that you think may have the code.

"Vital seconds may be lost here so it's important you follow the instructions on the cabinet."
