THREE of enjoyleisure’s gym facilities are to be refurbished, modernised and gain new gym equipment, but they will be closed while work is carried out.

It affects Meadowmill Sports Centre near Prestonpans, Dunbar Leisure Pool and North Berwick Sports Centre.

The upgrades, enjoyleisure hopes, will improve customer experience, both in terms of overall appearance and efficiency of the gym by making optimum use of the space available.

From next week enjoyleisure and the council will embark on a six-week rolling schedule to refurbish each of the three gyms.

But it means they will be closed for about two weeks each while it is carried out. Only the gym area will be closed to the public, all the other facilities in each centre will remain open.

The gym at Meadowmill Sports Centre closes at 10pm next Thursday (September 16) and is scheduled to reopen on September 29.

Dunbar Leisure Pool’s facility will close at 9pm on September 23 and is scheduled to reopen on October 6.

North Berwick Sports Centre’s gym will close at 10pm on September 30 and is scheduled to reopen on October 20.

Customers can look forward to a range of brand new, high specification equipment from Pulse Fitness.

Cardio machines will have fully interactive consoles with built in TV, music and apps capable of tracking workouts.

A range of resistance equipment will also be available. Free weights will be available at North Berwick Sports Centre.

Each of the three venues will also see refreshed lighting and a room redecoration.

As well as upgrading popular machines, brand-new pieces of kit will be installed.

Meadowmill is to receive a stair master machine, an alternative to the existing independent stepper.

Dunbar and North Berwick are to add an air bike to their cardio range, which use a large fan for resistance. The more effort a user gives, the more resistance it delivers. Movement of the handlebars also allows the upper body and core to be engaged for a full body workout.

enjoyleisure in partnership with East Lothian Council aims to upgrade the gym equipment within each of its sports centres on a five-year cycle. However recent Covid induced closures and equipment availability, has caused unexpected delays.

Bill Axon, chief executive of enjoyleisure, said: “We are thrilled that in collaboration with our partners East Lothian Council, enjoy has been able to retain its commitment to improving the leisure facilities and services on offer within our local communities.

“These initial three gym upgrades are just the first in a two-stage development which will see enjoy’s remaining gym facilities receiving a refurbishment in 2022.

“Public health and fitness remains at the top of the agenda for enjoyleisure; our objective is to take the lead in getting everyone more active, more often.

“I am extremely proud that enjoy and East Lothian Council are leading the way with these up-to-date installations at all community sport and leisure centres.

“This yet again highlights, especially during these challenging times, the commitment both the council and enjoy have, to provide high quality, accessible and affordable facilities to our communities.”
