THE new brewers at Prestonpans’ pub The Gothenburg have produced a light pint for day-trippers in the county, named in honour of John Muir.

Lewis Kent and Sean Wood, of Kentwood, took over the running of the microbrewery last month and found inspiration for new beers.

The John Muir Trail Travellers’ Tipple Dark Mild is already on tap at the pub, with plans to roll it out in bottles in the near future.

Sean said the beer, which has a low alcohol level, was inspired by a conversation with a group of cyclists who he had seen passing the pub.

He said: “I spoke to a group of sixteen cyclists in The Goth who regularly passed by but rarely popped in.

“This got me thinking about walkers and cyclists and anybody else travelling the John Muir Trail route for whom a low ABV (3.2 per cent) ale, could help fuel them on their way.

“The second factor was that the final runnings from an 80/- are actually still fairly potent if we get the right amount of malt in to begin with. This therefore give us the opportunity to create a second beer. So, our Traveller’s Tipple is basically a 60/-.”

The new brewers have plans for beer festivals at the pub in the future as well as BrewSets, where people can make their own beer.

Meanwhile, the pub has welcomed a host of new additions to its regular users since it began looking into community ownership.

Owner Dr Gordon Prestoungrange has revealed plans to put the pub on the market, but offered the community the chance to buy him out first.

Since the offer, a number of organisations have stepped forward with an interest in using the venue.

The addition of Kentwood as new brewers has been joined by Jazz Sundays, and clubs organising quiz nights, and regular meetings and events in it.

Staff at the pub met with Community Shares Scotland last week, which offers advice and support to groups wishing to use community shares to take over or set up a business.

Plans are now under way for them to visit Yorkshire, where there are two community-owned pubs, to learn more about what is involved.
